Here's where subtlety and nuance can make a very big difference. Obama can say in complete truth that he is AGAINST gay marriage, because he is. He can also say truthfully he is FOR gay civil unions, because he is. That's a big difference, because being FOR gay marriage means you are FOR forcing all religious institutions to use their resources to marry gay people in their places of worship, such as in a Catholic Church. That is not fair. We founded this country on freedom of religion. If a particular religion thinks acting on gay impulses is a sin, why are we going to legislate against that?

However, if we legislated FOR civil unions, then we could ensure that every gay person has equal rights in marriage that are indistinguishable from those of heterosexuals.

Obama represents where I stand perfectly, but it is a pretty nuanced position. Most people would say he's just pandering, but if you scratch beneath the surface, it makes a heck of a lot of sense and can be the foundation from which to bring people together instead of to perpetuate a silly war between factions on the issue.
