The Toyota prius used to be 70 miles per gallon, assuming battery drive the wheels in city.

Now they only claimed 48 miles per gallon, because prius uses a smaller gasoline engine. If they don't use batteries at all. Batteries take a while to charge up, so the range is limited and savings few and far between.

The small engine is not a trick but real need to save gasoline.

Fortunately Prius still did not have coasting capabilities. Otherwise they may claim 96 miles per gallon of gasoline.
