Yes, Obama supports civil unions with all the rights under US law, just like heterosexual unions. All heterosexual unions are civil unions also. The only difference is that most heterosexuals also get married under the auspices of some church as well.
Here's the thing. My thinking has changed dramatically on this, in large part to recent scientific findings that show that there are genetic and chemical predispositions that lead to gay behavior, as well as environmental elements that also lead to gay behavior. So the more science gets into the act, the more we find that everyone is along the line in a spectrum from fully gay to fully heterosexual with everything in between. So to be draconian in our measures to crush the gay population seems a bit misguided to me, despite the onerous pronouncements in the Bible of it being an abomination.
I'm Catholic, so this is hard for me to say, but the Bible was written by some old Jewish men. Who's to say that they got everything right? Perhaps, they received God's word, but misinterpreted it? Or more likely, they added in their own rules, which may have made perfect sense 2000 years ago.
Either way, science tells us that we shouldn't be so judgmental in this particular case, unless we want to hold people accountable for the natural variation in their genetic makeup. To do so would smack of the Nazi plan to me. |
