i think partly it's a problem of definitions. the argument that large cars are less safe comes down to maneuverability. obviously large cars do not maneuver as well, so are more likely to get into collisions.
the argument against small cars is that, in a collision with a large car, they will lose. however, they may be more likely to avoid collisions in the first place.
so, if you know you are going to collide, a large car would be better. if you want to avoid colliding, a small car is better. of course, if a large car collides with you, you are SOL.
in a place like Texas, where many people have large vehicles, i have my doubts about the safety of small cars.
but as consumers move to smaller cars over the next decade due to high fuel prices, it will probably become safer to drive small cars due to reduced risk of getting mowed down by a big car. |
