mid-year review of AMSC

INTRO Here's my semi-annual exercise to see if I remember why I own the stocks I own, and so I can check back and see if their stories have changed. I post in case it helps others too.

AMSC
(market cap $1.5B)

American Superconductor's story changed but I don't know if it is fundamental or temporary. I still see the company as an eventual supplier of superconducting cables for transmission, motors and regulation. Those product lines are not mature yet, and I am not surprised. Though I expect they aren't too far off and the energy and political situation should encourage the process. Whether through genius or luck, the company's acquisition into the wind power industry has been very successful. I don't know if it redefines the company's strategy or merely expands it mightily. In either case it is good news. The wind power revenues are a good example of how the company may branch out into solar and other energy efficiencies just as the market demand increases.

The company and the stock are slowly sliding from speculation to investment, but that transition is still at least a year away. The transition will be complete when there are numerous mature product lines and a few quarters of appreciable revenues reports.

I will continue to hold, though I might sell a bit if I think the stock over-reacts for whatever reason.

DISCLAIMER LTBH since 2003 but those first shares are gone.
