Derek, this last paragraph in the 56K failure article:
Well, the modem makers have already blown it on this one. People are indeed desperate for bandwidth, but by the time 56k modem makers get their standards act together, a lot of people will have decided to hold out for cable modems.

It makes me laugh, because cable modems were first announced about 6 months PRIOR to 56K announcement! Granted, I completely agree that "if it's available, get it". But the facts are: 56K is rolling out lightspeeds faster than cable. And the author ignores his own admission: People are crying and begging for faster internet access. Since in most cases people can simply pay a small one-time premium ($60) for a 56K modem and get a 50-60% performance boost, most people are going to do it.
