I have always wondered why the American sheeple have been so passive about that. Some sort of weird masochism? It has to do with intent. If somebody intentionally causes harm, a certain mindset reacts ballisticaly. The same mindset reacts like John Belushi in the opening scenes of the Blues Bro's movie, as he dusts himself off of his exploded building and walks off, if the cause lacks an evil mind behind it. Hence smoking, autos, guns, drugs, global warming, whatever, are not problems of anywhere near the magnitude of Muslims or Communists. The actual numbers involved are irrelevant. What made the Blues Brothers so great was this overt reaction of non-concern to a problem that did have an evil mind behind it. I'd guess it was satire on how we ignore all sorts of dangers, if we are comfortable with them.
