isnt it possible that bill ayres who is now in the public service arena has changed his ways enough so that his past shouldnt be used to tarnish folks like obama and daly who sit on boards with him and have decent personal relations with him?

First, it would be possible in theory for him to have changed his ways. And he has changed his actions. But he made a point of saying he didn't regret a thing about his bombing activity and he wished they'd done more.

What did he do - though not convicted in a court of law, he's known to have been involved in planting a bomb in a ladies bathroom in the Pentagon. He was also involved in the WU when they were preparing a bomb for Ft. Dix that blew up on them. He wasn't on the scene when it blew though. That bomb was packed with nails and was designed to kill military personnel. I think public repentence is appropriate. He doesn't.

Second, re. Obama - he didn't just set on a board with him, they gave him a boost in his start in politics. He made a mistake in how he handled the Ayers issue from the getgo - defending him as just a guy in his neighborhood and an ordinary figure in politics in Chicago. He ought to have had at least the good judgment to make clear that someone with Ayers background SHOULDN'T be on boards and SHOULDN'T be a force in Chicago politics.

Thats my opinion.

As for Byrd, I think the Democrats ought to denied him the Majority Leader position. Republicans did that to Lott for an awful lot less. As far as I know, Byrd has never even apologized like Lott did.

Hell, Bobby Byrd is a senator who has done some good work after his bad beginnings. People do change. Ayres biggest blunder imho is that he has failed to admit that what he did in the 60s was wrong. He also should have paid a price for that but like many walks the streets because the evidence wasnt strong enough etc.
