I don't see that assumption made. It is true that fossil fuels are the major source of energy now. Its also true that fossil fuels outcompete solar and wind on straight economics right now.

I think you're making an assumption though. That wind and solar can somehow be adopted on scale massive enough to replace fossil fuels in the near future and that the cost to our economy and way of life will be minimal. All we have to do is have the government put the right framework in place and it'll happen that way.
