TJ, a quick story regarding Chinese and speculation/capitalism. After the Vietnam war one of my friends was one of those who never came home and migrated to Thailand. About 1977 he told me this story.

While there he witnessed an event where the local Thais periodically went on a rampage and burned down Chinese businesses out of jealousy. Replacing them with their own Thai businesses.

My friend eventually met a Chinese business man and while having drinks asked why the Chinese seemed so calm and philosophical after these events. The Chinese gentleman replied that it wouldn’t be long before they would have the businesses back again, buying them cheap from the Thais who would run them into the ground.

My friend tried to start a duck farm but it failed, its probably owned by a Chinese businessman now... Ha!
