Wait a minute... your HFC cable plant is only installed in atmost 10-15% of the lines. I quoted Jim W. 20% this week, but I think that's high. I don't think Lucent will corner the market on integrating ADSL in an existing CO solution. Lucent is only claiming they are the first to offer the same architecture in the CO, remote locations or in the DLC/SLC systems.

Yeh, take a look at what Ameritech is purchasing.

..Access Interface Unit (AIU) - A new cost-effective non-blocking line unit for the 5ESSr Switch that will be generally available in 1996. This line unit initially supports enhanced performance and reduced operational costs for analog connections, but will also support ISDN and ADSL in the future ...

WARREN, N.J. -- Lucent Technologies announced today that Ameritech has purchased more than 500 of Lucent's Access Interface Units (AIU) which will help ease the battle for network access between Internet users and users making ordinary telephone calls....

.... Switch-integrated ADSL is implemented using just two new switch circuit packs, one to terminate copper loops and one to interface with ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks. Analog and ISDN access lines will be supported using existing AIU (Access Interface Unit) line cards. Introduced in 1996, the AIU is the next-generation line unit for the 5ESS-2000 that virtually eliminates call blocking, often caused by heavy Internet usage....

Two circuit packs or line cards that fit into the 5ESS architecture to implement ADSL. Team with with Westell/Amati's lowest-cost DMT solution, I'm convinced the Lucent/Westell/Amati team WILL provide the lowest cost solution. This should bring the ADSL solution below the $500 range.

I'll discuss your other points at a later time.... until later.
