but that air pollution is pretty bad.

There are hundreds of forest fires burning in California that are putting out magnitudes more carbon in the air than all the vehicles in the state. There's a rumor that the CA Air Resources Board is preparing to file suit against God, seeking a cease and desist order forbidding any further dry lightening storms. God will be required to obtain an air quality permit before any future forest fires will be allowed to occur..

Maybe that's pollution arriving with the prevailing winds, but given the amount of oil and stuff burned in the USA, I guess a lot of it is home-grown.

Air quality in most of the US is pretty good these days, in spite of our "oil guzzling"..

sunsets in NZ, the air is so particulate free that the sun has to be down to the horizon to get the red going and the best colour is on the bottom of clouds,

Yes, NZ has the advantage of being located in a hemisphere that is predominately covered in ocean. It's nice that the air in NZ at sea level is as crystal clear as one needs to climb to high elevation to experience here ..

That's why melanoma rates are so high among the melanin-deficient in Australasia

Are you aware that, due to the variation in the earths orbit around the sun, that during summer in the southern hemisphere, the sun is closer to the earth than during northern summers? Conversely, your winters are farther from the sun than ours..
