"Carter didn't have an energy plan other than all suffer equally and "conserve" our way out of it."

Then who started all those alternative energy programs during his term?

"The sixth principle, and the cornerstone of our policy, is to reduce the demand through conservation."

Well duh, harris. There was an immediate problem. Conservation is about all you can do immediately. More drilling doesn't help immediately, that takes time. As does anything else.

Or is your motto "why do today when you can put it off until the crisis is deeper"?

The tenth principle is that we must start now to develop the new, unconventional sources of energy we will rely on in the next century.

What's the problem? You didn't understand this part?

Only the dim witted would expect an alternative energy program to pay off in the short term. So, here we are in the next century, but we killed all those programs almost 30 years ago.

Brilliant bit of foresight, there...

Beam me up Scotty

Well, because of your team's brilliant planning, that is our best option. Of course, the odds of winning a Power Ball Lottery is higher, but you have faith, don't you?
