I'm in NYC for the weekend and the subway is really a great service here.

But it just doesn't work in all places, as when you're in a more spread out place people will pay a lot (in gas cost) to have the freedom of their owntransportation.

Driving in NYC makes no sense anyway, since you can get where you're going faster on the subway. I imagine that, and the inability to find parking, is the most important factor in many places like this.
