Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe cars became more fuel-efficient from the 70's to the 80's, especially with the popularity of port fuel injection. Emissions were also cleaned up big time with the advent of catalytic converters (which also necessitated unleaded fuels).

We may be seeing a similar shift in automotive technology as hybrids become more popular. Don't know how we're going to "solve" the problem of CO2 as a "pollutant," though. It used to be that for exhaust, CO and O3 was bad and CO2 was good. Now even CO2 is bad, but H2O is still good. Tomorrow, H2O bad?
