Not sure you would wind up with a different result. Unless perhaps you had different candidates in the field.

(Most of McCain's rivals from this year's primaries --- Romney, Huckabee, etc, to pick just the two strongest of them --- likely would have run even weaker nationally then McCain. At some level I believe that the GOP Party pros were looking to field someone with the best chance of ecking out a win.)
