Indeed, there were political moves in England to alleviate the worst of the famines and unemployment. But those socialist moves were stopped.

Why is it "socialist" to alleviate famine? Soup kitchens exist in good times and bad, whatever the economic system. Unemployment is another issue, but it's tough to work when you're starving.

food should be given higher political priority to alleviate suffering around the world due to food being burned in SUVs instead of eaten by hungry people.

There's plenty of food in the world. If it's not getting to hungry people, it's because the channels are blocked by dictators or armies, not because ethanol is being burned by an SUV.

a person driving an SUV today, using ethanol, wouldn't want to scrutinize too closely their ethical position, would they?

Scrutinize away.
