"What, you think the fact that the price of oil falling to $20/barrel didn't vindicate the moves at the time?"

No.

A handful of countries brought our economy to its knees. And then, the Iranian revolution knocked us down on our bellies.

If that wasn't a wake up call, what is? Carter cast the issue as a national security one. Which it was and is.

"Better yet, you want to excuse Clinton for not reinstating them back when we had the opportunity? "

The programs should not have been shut down in the first place. Bush1, Clinton and later Bush2 bobbled it by not starting them again.

"The bottom line is that Carter's dire predictions turned out to be false."

This is like arguing that Russian roulette is perfectly safe because you have gone two rounds and are still alive. It was couched as a national security issue because it didn't seem safe to depend on the good will of the Middle East to safeguard our economy. And now, even though they aren't actively trying to torpedo us, it is happening anyway.

But, hey, $20 and lower oil justified it...
