me: Alternative energy is coming. We need to be a first mover in the industry.

you: Why? The real wealth often goes to people/groups/companies/organizations other than the first movers.

That certainly has not been the case in the tech industry. Think of Google, Microsoft, Cisco, and Intel. First movers in tech typically get the patents and monopoly-like market shares. Alternative energy is nothing more than a specific application for new tech. The same will apply in alternative energy. Think of First Solar and SunPower. They have the best tech and have been first movers. Both are US companies currently being stymied by an unresponsive and hostile US Government. Luckily, they have plenty of overseas markets to sell into.

At the very least, if we don't want to be first movers, then we should be fast followers. However, our government isn't even willing to do that. Instead, it is actively hostile to the alternative energy industry and actively kissing the ass of the oil industry. Leave it to our leaders to figure out exactly the wrong thing to be doing at times of crisis.
