Do you think we should have been subsidizing oil companies to produce 2M barrls a year of above market liquidified coal like Carter's Synthetic Fuels Corp was supposed to do? That was the crown jewel of Carter's alternative energy programs.

Let's see. You are Carter.......you're trying to wean the nation off oil. So you come up with a quasi public corp. to develop synthetic fuel. Of course, the GOP isn't happy about it.....oil and the GOP are in bed together. They need oil to pay those membership dues. So they try to kill Carter's plan but Carter is a stubborn ole coot. He buys off the GOP by offering the oil companies a partnership with the new corp. The GOP figures it buys them time until such time in the future they can kill it so they go along with it. And kill they did......just one more example of how the anti-Christ movement has hurt this country:

"The original intention of the corporation was to partner with industry (primarily oil companies) to create a market for domestically-produced synthetic liquid fuels, with a goal of producing 2 million barrels of liquid fuel per year within five years. Critics of the Synthetic Fuels Corporation point to its failure to achieve its goals as a reason to prevent government from interfering with free markets. The purported objective behind the Synthetic Fuels Corporation was to move research and development of synthetic fuels out of the Department of Energy and into a public-private partnership that would produce tangible results in a short period of time.
