It did, but wearing sweaters, setting the thermostat too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer, driving 55, carpooling, along with the message that the time of American exceptionalism was over, just didn't gain much traction and attracted a lot of kickback. I thought the "humbleness" was part of his Christianity that he was trying and failing to convince Americans to follow.

If he could have somehow convinced us that we were in a struggle to break an addiction to oil, and gotten us all involved in it as a national cause, maybe it would have worked. He didn't have the necessary charisma.
