one hell of an efficiently run supermarket chain.

My niece runs the books for a supermarket.
They aim to out-compete walmart on price, and that means really low prices. They also have more workers in the store than walmart to point customers to tasty things to buy.

The profit per sale is low, maybe 1.5%, sometimes less, but that isn't the annual profit. They restock and sell again sometimes several times a day. Often a can is sold before the supplier was even paid. The store easily gets 5% return on capital even after paying all those checkers and stockers.
