you aren't giving even 1/10th of the credit to our government that you should be giving. The US government also unleashed the communications industry through the Telecom Act of 1996. They funded the Internic project in a joint venture with private industry through the NSF and then set it free by licensing it to ICANN. In addition, they put a moratorium on Internet sales taxes and funded lot's of research programs within Academia for a faster, more robust Internet. In addition, they spent billions on military research programs on using the Internet to create an always on communication mechanism between all of our field forces, down to individuals. Literally, our government has poured hundreds of billions into the Internet through direct subsidies, joint ventures with academia and industry. The benefit to the US has also literally been in the trillions of dollars, which is a very large benefit compared to the hundreds of billions our government invested.

All I'm saying is that our government should do the same for the alternative energy industry, so that we benefit most instead of Europe or China.
