Google was not the first search engine, true, but search is not what made them rich. It was their linking of search to ads and their viral marketing and sharing of ad profits that was their secret sauce. They were first movers in this market that they created and no one has every caught up.

Microsoft was the first mover in commercializing a GUI OS on a generic, open standards based computer, now called the PC and they've dominated as a result.

Ebay and Amazon are other example of first movers that have dominated.

You are right about Cisco. They were actually fast followers that beat out all the competition through savvy acquisitions and superior management over time.

Either way, you win by being either a first mover or a fast follower. You don't win by sitting on the sidelines of the game. Right now, the US government is sitting on the sidelines of the game in alternative energy. Luckily for the US, Gov. Schwartzenegger is a man of vision and is pushing ahead with his own agenda in California. That and Silicon Valley will keep pushing despite the actively hostile administration we have now.
