Sal, I must politely point out a certain asymetry in your viewpoint. Perhaps Bill would rather die than admit that Solaris is actually more reliable that NT, or that 27 million lines of bloated middleware OS may not make NT more reliable and "enterprise ready", or that the war on Java has nothing to do with what a good language Java is, and how it has to be made safe for Windows. Who is supposed to believe that last line after the great Java purge at www.microsoft.com? Meanwhile, the marketing peers are going around to Sun VAR's and telling them to switch to NT, or Microsoft will kill them. Then, Ballmer goes on record saying "Let's not be religious about this." A peculiar view of what is religious and what isn't, one I'm quite familiar with as sometimes resident religious zealot in chief.

Sun's doing ok, better than I would have guessed a year ago when I looked up the specmarks for the Pentium Pro vs. the best Sun had to offer. They got a tough road ahead of them, but it's not because NT is so great. It's because Intel has vastly better economies of scale, and the PC vendors are used to operating on cutthroat margins. Like Apple, Sun was late to grasp how tough it would be to hold on to traditional hardware margins as computers became commodities.
