I saw a fascinating show on commercial aviation the other day. In it, one of the reasons given for why commercial airlines transitioned so quickly to jets was maintenance.

With a piston-engined plane, all of the engines need to be taken out and completely rebuilt after 20,000 hours of use or less. After 20,000 hours, a jet engine still specs outs as if it were brand new. Jets are still flying today with engines that are over fifty years old.
