Usually, though, the companies in the private sector who do that are the ones that will fail. Either that, or they succeed not because of merit, but because of market power such as that possessed by monopolies.

The government does cut and increase funding for different departments and programs each year. A lot does depend on politics but the same can be said in the private sector.

As to monopolies there is always the vote... Republicans thought they had a congressional monopoly and were proven wrong in '06, at least partially because of their profligate ways (and corruption).

I do admit that the US government is far more cumbersome, less agile than a private company, but it is also far more cumbersome, less agile than a totalitarian state. The price we pay for Democracy.

One thing that would make government MUCH better is to get the special interest money out of politics.
