You raised most of the right questions. Basically the installed telephone network in this country (and in most of the world) cannot be competative when one deals in the digital domain. Yet never forget -the large operating Regional and Long Distance Providers are the ones with the pockets that are deep enough to correct this shortcoming. Look at GTE's $28Billion bid for MCI. In so far as the constant stream of offers you get from Long Distance providers I suggest you analyze each fully. I do so as a matter of business and I've yet to find one that truly is competative with the big three.Usually their savings accrue only if the length of a long distance call exceeds 20 minutes or theire is a monthly surcharge which when added into the average cost of each call made during a month causes the phone bill to exceed what it would have been on one of the major long distance companys. In other words savings will only accrue under these types of plans if the total number of long distance minutes billed is very large.
