NATION’S FIRST eco friendly Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant is coming up in Vijayawada, foundation for which has been laid. The 125 MW plant will be built in the premises of Vijayawada Thermal Power Plant (VTPS) and production will start by 2011.

The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGENCO) jointly invested in this Rs 950 crore plant. In this joint venture, APGENCO’s share is Rs 530 crores and the rest has been invested by BHEL.

Laying the foundation stone for the plant, the Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said that this is a good sign when global warming threats are looming large across the world. One more plant with this technology has been planned to start at Auria in Uttar Pradesh in a few months. This 200 MW plant would be a joint venture of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and BHEL, he said. The coal usage in the country is increasing year after year and the present 470 million tonnes will be doubled in the coming five years he added.

Though this IGCC technology is presently used in low ash coal in many advanced countries, using it in high ash coal has happened for the first time in the world in this plant. In a world where oil is not abundant, this could be among the alternative energy strategies.
