I don't understand why power generators can't alternate between the two......much like a hybrid car. Obviously, there would have to be some costly retrofitting but it seems to be the way to go.

Do you mean that a wind turbine runs like a hybrid car? I think the battery for such a thing would be the most expensive part of the whole wind tower.

The entire grid with many power sources working together is what needs some storage - or back up power, which would be less costly than providing constant output from every single tower.
