With the screaming once again commencing at the idea of a 55 or 60 mph speed limit. A modest proposal: Leave the speed limit where it is. But require installation of a speed monitor on all cars manufactured, oh say, after 1990, those have the circuitry that would support it.
When the driver pulls up to a gas station and his average highway speed is over 60mph, the price of gasoline goes to..let's say $12.00 a gallon. For the rest of us, it sells at market price.
Capitalism at work. Manufacturing and selling the speed monitor devices on cars and gas pumps oughta be good for several thousand jobs. I doubt there would be much cheering for it in the oil patch, however.
Call it rationing, with a high tech twist.
