What is the process used to extract it? Is is viable???

It's called retorting and an experimental process called in situ retorting - basically heat it up until the "oil" (aka kerogen) comes out. The process is viable with oil prices above $60 per barrel with the possibility of eventually getting under $30 per barrel after the first few plants are operational and the magic of scale kicks in to make it really economical.

It can be strip mined or "room and pillar", the in situ process does this all leaving the material in place. All methods use massive quantities of water and create lots of waste issues that must be addressed before scale can be achieved.
