Re: CT shutting down PHS in favor of CDMA. One implication from this change is that TD-SCDMA is still having problems and is not ready for general use. If it were, you can be sure that the Chinese, imitating the Europeans, would set a single standard for future telecom expansion and reap not only the benefits from lower royalties (if any) but also compatibility throughout the whole country.

That single standard, though perhaps a long term goal, has not materialized because of inherent problems with TD-SCDMA, especially when compared to the flexibility and reliability of CDMA. Also, the Chinese may have found that CDMA infrastructure is in fact less expensive because a modern CDMA system is backward compatible with earlier CDMA systems and requires less new equipment at the base stations.
