It's good to keep perspective. Business goes through cycles. We're in a down cycle now and it'll be another 12 months before we start to see a decent upswing in the economy. Even if it takes longer, the point is that the upswing will come.

Having said that, there can be no doubt that adding $5 trillion to the national debt in 8 years is going to put a lid on growth for decades to come. It will eat a large chunk of our government's annual budget and it will make Fed policy less effective. We're going to have to come together as a country to pay that debt down, even if it means increased taxes for everyone. That is the medicine that most Republicans don't want to hear. The last Republican to raise taxes was Bush Sr. He was a smart and good man. Maybe the last of the truly great Republicans.
