Right... you were talking about "anti matter" when you said... "The only thing the government should subsidise is research so that industry will know which alternate to use next, and how to plan its phase in." Yes and no. Most research should be done by private companies; some of this research is not profitable in the near term. Most research for solar, wind, and EV’s are done. So I really wasn’t referring to solar, wind, etc. Also I don't think solar, wind, nor rechargeable batteries will ever be wholly practical, only stopgaps. So the only research alternate worthwhile on or near the horizon, is fusion, which would be used to manufacture hydrogen for fuel cells. Anti-matter and the rest are beyond the horizon, but still warrant research.
