Company Submits Initial Application to ERCOT for the Interconnection Process for Baytown Sustainable Energy and Power Center
BAYTOWN, TX--(MARKET WIRE)--Jul 15, 2008 -- Sustainable Power Corp. (Other OTC:SSTP.PK - News) is pleased to announce that it has submitted the initial application for the electrical power grid interconnection process for the Baytown Sustainable Energy and Power Center. The Baytown Sustainable Energy and Power Center is a 523 Megawatt power generation facility to be built on the Sustainable Power Corp. Baytown site, which will produce its own fuels from non-petroleum sources using the Rivera Process.
Interconnection is the process through which new electrical power generation facilities are integrated into the electrical power grid and wholesale markets for Texas. The interconnection process starts with submission of a Security Screening Study application to the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). ERCOT has authority over the operation of the electrical power "grid" and the wholesale power markets throughout most of Texas. Based on the information submitted for the Baytown Sustainable Energy and Power Center, ERCOT will identify any requirements for reinforcing the power transmission system to enable the new facility to be integrated while maintaining the reliable and secure operation of the grid and wholesale power markets.
"Working with ERCOT and CenterPoint Energy, the owner and operator of the transmission system in Baytown, are crucial phases in the successful development of the Baytown Sustainable Energy and Power Center. This project will bring over 500 Megawatts of electrical capacity, enough to power over 400,000 homes, in the Houston area. It will replace older fossil-fueled power generation stations with power produced from non-food renewable sources such as agricultural waste and jatropha and will reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels," according to Jim Armstrong, Vice President of Sustainable Energy Project Development for Sustainable Power Corp. "Ultimately, a reliable, secure interconnection to the power grid is the only way to ensure that the environmental and economic benefits of this project can reach the consumers in the Houston ERCOT load zone."
John Rivera, CEO of Sustainable Power Corp., stated: "The Baytown Sustainable Energy and Power Center is being developed as a model nationally and worldwide for using local resources to meet electrical power needs while addressing questions about secure energy sources and our global environment. None of these benefits can help the consumers until we are securely interconnected to the ERCOT grid. The interconnection process is long and will take a lot of work on our part and with ERCOT and Centerpoint. However, like everything we are doing here, we intend to do it right or not at all."
