well if gas goes back to $3.50, how do you incent usage of alternates without subsidies?

If gas goes to $3.50 and the next viable alternate is the equivalent of $6.00, why would you waste time and money subsidizing a wasteful alternate? The only thing the government should subsidise is research so that industry will know which alternate to use next, and how to plan its phase in.

It should not be allowed to go back to $3.50. If the market doesn't cooperate, pile on the taxes.
