MCI steps away from BT, Part II
To carry out its transaction, GTE would have to borrow an
estimated $28 billion, triggering a temporary decline in GTE's
earnings growth rate. The WorldCom bid is payable entirely with
its high-flying stock, which is subject to market fluctuations,
unlike cash.
A source close to WorldCom's group of advisers said MCI's
decision to talk with GTE and WorldCom was not a surprise. "BT
is not a bidder here any more," the source said.
"MCI now has leverage to the extent that they are talking
to both (GTE and WorldCom). I think they are going to try to
work out deal with one of them and agree to that deal and shut
out the other," the arb said.
On Thursday, GTE shares closed 3-1/4 lower at 44-3/4, MCI
jumped 1-1/4 to 38-1/8, WorldCom shed 11/16 to 34-3/4 and BT's
American Depositary Receipts added 1-1/8 to 76-1/8.
