Eric, slight correction. "Gook" actually means "country," not "person."

Korea - Han-gook
America - Me-gook

"Me-gook" has its roots in Chinese and literally means "big, beautiful country." For America to be named this way and not some Romanized phonetic name like "Ah-Meh-Rick-Ah" should be taken as a compliment, but unfortunately it has also led to the racial slur.

As for McCain, I can understand the bitterness, but the fear is that it will affect his judgement as Commander-In-Chief. Racism? Only if he referred to someone else other than his captors that way.
