The Intel division that makes memory chips and other semiconductors had an operating loss of $706 million last quarter on sales of $300 million.

The memory business formed a joint venture to produce so- called Nand flash memory with Micron Technology Inc. The operation is suffering from a glut of the products, which store data in mobile devices such as Apple Inc.'s iPhone. Prices of flash chips fell as much as 20 percent in June, Boise, Idaho- based Micron said last month.

Intel expects price declines to continue for the rest of this year, Smith said. They won't drag down profits because manufacturing improvements will reduce production costs, he said.

Anyone know if Numonyx was included in the above loss? INTC loses more money than SPSN revenues just on NAND? God I hate it when the forces that be allow that sort of situation to occur. INTC is an abomination of the free enterprise spirit much as Standard Oil once was. If someone doesn't do something a few companies are going to end up with all of tech.
