GOOD NEWS! UBS today says:

"We believe that Ascend's ATM position at AT&T may be
improving in 1998."

1) Opportunity At WorldNet: AT&T recently has stated that they
will be moving away from using BBN as their backbone provider for
Internet traffic and begin using their own internal network. We believe that Ascend is the main supplier of ATM switches to AT&T WorldNet. The selection of Cascade at AT&T Worldnet was made several months ago. While this is not a new network design win, the decision of AT&T to use an internal network for Internet traffic should increase the overall opportunity for Ascend's ATM equipment.

2) Design Win For Native ATM Service: Our research shows that
AT&T has
recently selected Ascend ATM equipment for T3-based ATM
services. We view
this as a new incremental win for Ascend which will enhance the
overall
position of the company with the AT&T network. We believe
Ascend beat out
Cisco (CSCO-$83 -Buy), Newbridge (NN-$63 -Hold) and Lucent
(LU-$87 11/16-Buy)
for this opportunity although we are not absolutely positive if all
of these
vendors were being considered. We should emphasize that this is
not a decision
for the long term plan for migrating private line services over an ATM core network. We believe that vendor selection will occur sometime over the next few months.
