Ascend Communications (ASND) 35 1/16 +1 7/16: Can't keep the guys over at Wall Street
Strategies quite for too long. Today, the newsletter is reporting a possible buyout of the company by
Lucent. While wrong more times than not, the newsletter has been on the money a couple of times
this year. (Posted 12:00 ET). From Briefing.com.
Although I think the probability of this is < 0.2. However, I would not rule it out completely as LU only signed a definitive agreement w/ Livingston for which LU can back out w/ some material penalty. I've seen co. backing out of many deals before. As I said before, had it not been for the pooling-of-interest rule LU would have acquired ASND for it has the broadest product portfolio among potential targets and already had strong presence in domestic/international ISO, carrier, and telco markets. The reason LU offered 4th-rated Livingston was that LU knew that by the time LU will have been eligible for the pooling-of-interest, ASND will have been gone already. Thus, it is trying to get what is available in the market right now. In another word, LU must have thought that ASND would be acquired by this year or next year. NT is a top suiter as its market cap is about $27 Bil and its stock is very strong currency, at $107 1/2 yesterday close. ANother indicator could be watching for LU, NT, and other potential suitors for a pronounced drop in price. This usually happens before a M&A takes place.
