Forced conscription is not typically necessary, and in fact often may not be beneficial.

Also its IMO unjust.

About the only time it might make enough sense, and be important enough, to accept, despite the injustice, is when

1 - The method of fighting relies more on mass, then individual skill and experience (those are ALWAYS important factors, but the balance between those two and mass has shifted over time)

and

2 - You are in a huge war

and

3 - That war is one in which the most vital of a countries interest and perhaps its very existence is at risk

and

4 - There are an insufficient number of volunteers.

#4 might just possibly be substituted for by

5 - Almost every single capable individual would volunteer and there is a huge advantage in efficiency or quickness from just drafting them.

Maybe WWII qualifies under those criteria. Maybe the Civil War. You could try to argue WWI. Besides those I don't think any of the other American wars qualifies.
