In about 1981 I developed my theory of Earth as an oil and methane production system when I noticed the correlation of ophiolites and oil deposits.

Simply, biological material sinks to the ocean floor, is turned into kilometres of sediment as it is carted along to the subduction zone where most of it is plunged down into the super high pressure cooker where the low density hydrocarbons separate and float up into sedimentary layers and to power volcanoes.

The volcanic fuel is recycled and much of the rest is recycled too unless it meets a sedimentary trap.

In situ formation of oil from sedimentary layers seems more problematic. For example, the sheer quantity of oil in some places such as Saudi Arabia is hard to explain by a lot of fish getting buried in sediment in situ.
