Stuart,
INTC is the bellweather of the Chip industry, if it is not doing well
it is signalling that industry growth is slowing due to excess capacity and low chip prices and thus low margins. This has a direct
influence on the equipment manufacturers because it means the chip
industry will likely need less equipment going forward and therefore
fewer orders, and lower earnings.

The current software will meet 100% of the current hardware
requirements. Hardware always leads software capability by 2-3 years
and the next 64 bit hardware is still 2-3 years away from mass
market exposure. There is no current need for 64 bit software and
won't be for 3 years at least. There is no "critical" need for
64 bit hardware or software at this time. What will drive the hardware
and software are things like cable modems, gigabit ethernet, and "soft
applications" that replace hardware (like softmodems).

There will shortly be bargains in the semiconductor equipment industry, watch AMAT,LRCX,NVLS and be ready to invest when no one
wants them, then wait 3-12 months as the technology starts to transition to 300mm technology.
