the n word was the colloquial southern version of the accepted word, negro. I am not certain of this but i dont think it was considered more derisive than any other description of black folks back in the south in that time.

My mom actually invented a new term -- "Niggra". Kind of a mix between "nigger" and "negro".

I didn't ever know any of my grandparents, but my wife's grandparents used the term "nigger" routinely -- and it was hidden when it was used. Anywhere in the country (including the North) you would have heard the term "nigger" used routinely only a few decades ago.

Jackson's little slip up is, I believe, simply an instance of Democrats doing what Democrats do best -- living one life in the public eye and quite another privately. It was reported this morning that while Al Gore was making a big speech about conservation, his limo was sitting outside with the engine running. This is really the same kind of two-faced behavior that so many Dems are so guilty of.

I found myself thinking today how sad it is that while Jesse Jackson used this term and gets a pass, Mark Fuhrman used it and his career was ended, AND a horrible murder walked out of a courtroom a free man as a result. There is truly no justice.
