Re: car interior during a hot day.

I thought it might be of interest after I read the paper by Gerhard Gerlich & Ralf Tscheuschner, who describe a similar ad hoc experiment.

It's not the sort of paper that would be submitted as a formal treatise, but it does encourage general discussion. I think physics is a science that needs promotion as a popular science, and this type of publication helps in that direction. I would agree with the authors that the general population needs a better comprehension of physics, especially if they are going to critique a film by Al Gore on climate processes.

It does look as if one of the sections of the paper could do with a little revamping. Perhaps something has been lost in the translation? Sub sections 3.9.1 (Page 75) to 3.9.4 (Page 78).

Example:
"Obviously, the authors are confusing energy with heat. Further more, the system in question here is the atmospheric system of the Earth including the Earths ground.Since this system is assumed to be in radiative balance with its environment, and any other forms of energy and mass exchange with its environment are strictly prohibited,it defies a system in the sense of thermodynamics for which the second law holds strictly.

Heat is the net transfer of energy between two macroscopic systems due to a difference in temperatures. Heat is not a substance (heat is not caloric), heat is not moved or transferred… heat is the net transfer of energy.

Serway & Beichner, “Physics for Scientists and Engineers” fifth edition: “Heat is defined as the transfer of energy across the boundary of a system due to a temperature difference between the system and its surroundings.”

This is a subtle but very important difference then what is said in the paper by Gerhard Gerlich & Ralf Tscheuschner. If you are in touch with them, it would be worth clarification.
