The Early Word: Maliki Backs Off Support of Obama Plan

By Michael Falcone

As Senator Barack Obama continues his trip to the Middle East and Europe, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki has moved to clarify statements that he supports Mr. Obama’s plan to withdraw most American troops from Iraq over 16 months.

A spokesman for Mr. al-Maliki said that the comments the prime minister made to the German magazine Der Spiegel were “misunderstood and mistranslated'’ and were not “conveyed accurately.” The spokesman, Ali al-Dabbagh, did not elaborate on that explanation but did say that statements made by Mr. al-Maliki or members of the Iraqi government should not be taken as a sign of support for any presidential candidate.

Afghanistan was the first stop on Senator Obama’s overseas trip. As The Times’s Carlotta Gall and Jeff Zeleny report, he met yesterday with Afghanistan’s president Hamid Karzai, with American troops and received a briefing from military commanders.

The Obama campaign announced yesterday that later this week Mr. Obama will deliver a speech in Berlin’s Tiergarten Park, finally putting to rest rumors that he might speak in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

Senator John McCain is in New York City today where he was to meet with the city’s public schools chief, Joel Klein and attend a Yankees Game. The McCain campaign went on the air with its first general election contrast ad last week. The Times’s Jim Rutenberg takes a closer look at the ad, which will be broadcast on national cable television and 11 battleground states.

The Times’s Katharine Q. Seelye rounds up the action at Netroots Nation, a liberal bloggers conference that wrapped up this weekend in Austin, Tex. Former Vice President Al Gore made a guest appearance.

Veepstakes: The Times’s Adam Nagourney and Patrick Healy look at both the Obama and McCain campaigns’ not-so-secret search for the perfect vice presidential candidate. They write that the search could be nearing an end: “Mr. Obama is likely to announce his choice the week before the Democratic convention begins on Aug. 25, party officials said. Mr. McCain is leaning toward announcing his as soon as the Democratic convention is over, though associates said he had not ruled out making the announcement before the Olympics begin on Aug. 8.”
