IMHO the big picture is:

1) Semi's move in a four year cycle (boom/bust) that last topped out in 9/95. We are at the rough midpoint of the cycle looking at a better second half opportunity that should extend to 9/99. (These cycles are exact though)

2) The action today and in the near term is a short term pause and basing action before industry/economic fundamentals start to improve.

3) The "Intel = the market/industries health" equation will start to lessen its gripe on the brokerages' priesthood.

4) The MPU, advanced memory and other differentiated companies have a better chance in the next 24-36 months in avoiding the pure commodity doldrums and rise higher when the tide starts to roll in.
