Europe did pretty well getting ideas from research to production in the time period of 1850 to about 1930. Maybe the two world wars, maybe the welfare state, maybe something else has stopped them. Almost every area of scientific progress in the US has heavy contributions from immigrants, except for electronics and petrochemicals. In electronics, Asians (like Wang magnetic core memory, and Esaki tunnel diodes, and most every LED researcher) have made a larger contribution than Europeans.
